What JERN publishes

JERN considers Research Articles, Reviews and Meta-Analyses, Theory and Perspective Articles, and Methods, Measures, and Resources. Across article types, submissions should make a clear contribution to understanding experience-related neuroplasticity.

Strong submissions do more than report an association. They clarify mechanisms, boundary conditions, time courses, individual variability, causal inference, measurement, theory, or the cumulative state of evidence.

Preparing a manuscript

JERN uses a flexible initial-submission policy. Authors may submit a complete, readable manuscript in any clear and internally consistent scholarly format. The manuscript does not need to reproduce JERN’s publication design or production template at initial submission.

Manuscript file

  • A clear, single-column .docx file, or .doc when necessary
  • Title, abstract, keywords, main text, references, tables, and figures
  • Figures and tables placed near their intended locations
  • Complete and consistently formatted references; APA Style, 7th edition, is strongly encouraged at initial submission

Submission information

  • Names, affiliations, and email addresses for all authors
  • Corresponding author information
  • Funding and competing-interest declarations
  • Ethics, consent, data, materials, and code statements when applicable

Formatting after acceptance: Before production, accepted manuscripts must be revised to the JERN production template. This includes APA Style, 7th edition, for in-text citations and references; a readable 12-point font; double spacing; numbered main sections and subsections; and all required declarations and publication materials. Authors who follow these requirements at initial submission will reduce post-acceptance revisions and help the article move into production more quickly.

Editorial process

  1. Editorial assessment

    Editors assess journal fit, scholarly contribution, methodological rigor, ethics, transparency, and readiness for external review.

  2. Peer review

    Suitable manuscripts undergo single-blind review by qualified scholars with relevant expertise.

  3. Editorial decision

    Editors issue a reasoned decision after considering the manuscript, reviewer evidence, and the journal’s editorial standards.

  4. Production and publication

    Accepted articles proceed through copyediting, author review, final production, DOI registration, and publication.

Publication and charges

JERN publishes articles continuously. Each accepted article receives a DOI and a year-based article number and is published as soon as editorial and production requirements are complete. Articles are not held for scheduled issues or volumes.
