JERN provides a dedicated home for the science of experience-related neuroplasticity.
JERN connects research that is usually separated by discipline, population, method, or domain of experience, and gives that work a shared forum for cumulative explanation.
The science of experience-related neuroplasticity already exists. What it lacks is a unified intellectual home.
Mission
The Journal of Experience-Related Neuroplasticity is devoted to explaining how sustained experience changes neural, cognitive, and behavioral systems across the lifespan.
Research on bilingualism, education, music, exercise, occupational activity, environmental exposure, intervention, rehabilitation, adversity, enrichment, aging, and other forms of experience is often divided among journals organized around particular populations or disciplines. JERN provides a common scholarly forum in which these literatures can inform one another and contribute to cumulative theory.
Aims and scope
JERN publishes empirical, theoretical, methodological, and integrative scholarship examining how learned, sustained, environmental, social, cultural, occupational, and therapeutic experiences shape the brain and behavior.
How it may be studied
Behavioral, cognitive, neuroimaging, electrophysiological, computational, developmental, longitudinal, clinical, and interdisciplinary approaches.
A neural measure is not required when a manuscript makes a substantive contribution to theory, measurement, causal inference, or mechanistic understanding of experience-related change.
Editorial priorities
JERN gives priority to scholarship that clarifies mechanisms, time courses, boundary conditions, and sources of individual or contextual variation; distinguishes experience-related change from selection and correlation; integrates evidence across domains or levels of analysis; and advances transparent, reproducible, cumulative science.
The journal welcomes null, contradictory, and replication findings when they meaningfully constrain theory. Claims should remain proportionate to the design and evidence.
Publishing model
JERN is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by ERN Press. Articles are published continuously as soon as editorial and production requirements are complete. Each article receives a DOI and a year-based article number. Articles are not held for scheduled issues or volumes.
Authors retain copyright, and published articles are made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. JERN does not charge a submission fee. The inaugural article processing charge is US$750 and is payable only after acceptance.
